Does anyone know if government bonds and treasury bills are good investments? I am looking to invest in government bonds as an alternative to putting my money in a bank which offers a very limited amount of protection ($250,000 FDIC insurance limit). Which bonds are the best to invest in? Which bonds give the best returns and the most amount of protection? For instance, if I place $5,000,000 in government bonds, will my money be protected until the bond reaches maturity? I also was told that the money will be tax free if it is placed in government bonds, is this true? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
what is the trade symbol of the government bonds themselves ? I would like to invest in U.S.A government bonds directly (only govt bond index linked) and without involving securities that are indirectly related to government bonds but only just government directly. When I were looking for government bonds, all I could find are other kinds of securities such as mutual funds which invest in government bonds and such as ETFs & ETNs which invest in government bonds, but not the government bonds themselves. I am not interested in any other kinds of securities that are indirectly related to government bonds, but only in buying government bonds themselves. The bottom line I wanna to know, is what is the trade symbol of the government bonds themselves ? regards "trade symbol" i mean Identification Number/Sequence Numberq/security number... .... then, I would appreciate it if you could write for me Identification Number/Sequence Numberq/security number... .... regards

How can I track the value of my non-government bonds? I'm trying to add some non government bonds to my online portfolio to monitor their value but I can't find them on any of the major online tracking services (google, bloomberg, yahoo, FT, morningstar). They are bank bonds so I'd REALLY like to get an idea of what they are doing.
Can you redeem government savings bonds that were stolen? From 1982 through 1996, my parents, aunt and uncle bought me savings bonds twice a year. They would be worth about $11,000 if they hadn't been stolen in a break-in in 1996. I assumed they were gone for good, but a friend recently suggested that I can still redeem them with my social security number... Is that true? My mother seems to think that social security numbers weren't used in purchasing government bonds in the 80's.
When to use Government Bonds for school loans? My parents gave me government bonds they purchased years ago and I just started grad school. Not a dependent as I'm 30+. And will using these affect my reported income for school loans next year if I use them now?

What happends to the bonds government sells and buys? I understand that the government buys bonds to increase the money supply and sells them to decrease it. Why don't Universities invest their endowments in Government bonds? For example, if a Uni invested their 1B $ endowment in a bond issued at 3%/year, they'd make 30 Million in one year... They could simply take half of that interest and add it to their operating budget...while the rest of the interest continues to compound... For example, Harvard would make loads of money if they did this... But it seems they always invest in bad securities... Why don't universities go with insured bonds...??? Does the government not insure this much of a deposit? Thanks!
Why would a central bank buy bonds directly from a government? This seems weird to me. I thought the primary market was when the government sold bonds to the public. The secondary market was when the NY Fed sold and resold them in NY. But I think my understanding is wrong: does the primary market consist of the government selling bonds to its central bank, not the public?

i have a question on the effect of government auction on bonds? Q1 - If there is a government auction – more bonds are sold to the system and money is taken out from the system and given to the govrnmentt. So a govt auction leads to lower Liquidity and this is bad for the bond markets. Is this correct ? Q2 – If there is no government auction coming then there is more liquidity. This will help bonds more at the shorter end than the longer end. What does this mean ? Q3 - Large borrowing program by the government is bad for the bond market. But more for the longer end. What does this mean ?

Conflicting sources on who buys government bonds? As I understand it, when Congress wants to increase the size of the national debt, they can issue bonds. Now... one source tells me the largest buyer of these bonds is the Federal Reserve. The Fed pays for these bonds with new money. Now another source tells me that the Fed is forbidden from actually buying and selling from the Treasury directly. This source says that the Treasury sells these bonds on the Open Market and the Fed can then buy these bonds on the open market (from authorized dealers) with new money. So.....which is it?....Can the Fed buy Treasury Securities directly or can it only buy them through the Open Market "middle man".
