How can I calculate income from bonds investing? I buy a bond now and that bond was issued on 03/15/2007, so the last coupon payment was on 09/15/2008 and the next one is on 03/15/2009 when the bond matures. My question is do I receive the whole coupon payment on 03/15/2009 and the principle also? Than you!
How do you include the interest income from the redemption of Series EE Bonds? I need help in accounting for some Series EE bonds I had cashed in in 2006 on my federal tax return. There were various bonds I had that were originally issued between 1983 and 1986. From the bank I cashed them in at I received a "Statement of Interest Paid for Redemption of US Savings Bonds", but not a 1099-INT. This statement shows the breakdown and total Interest I earned on the bonds. Should I just assume that statement I received is the 1099-INT? I am planning on using that information to include in my Interest Income section, but am not sure if I should have received a 1099-INT as well. Does anybody have any information to help me out? I did my preliminary return using HR Block software. I wasn't totally sure where to include this amount. I added it as Interest Income, but I'm not sure if that's correct. I never received the 1099INT for the amount, just the statement indicating the total interest income earned from the redemption. The software seemed to indicated a 1099INT should have been received. There was also no place to indicate that they were Series EE bonds, so where it said enter name of Bank I included Name-Series EE Redemption. Think that is sufficient? Thanks
Cashed savings bonds taxed as income if I used it for tuition? In May 2006 I cashed in about $950 worth of savings bonds some family gave me when I was young (27-30 years ago). I took this money and put it in my checking account and immediately used the proceeds (and then some...) to pay off my outstanding college tuition bill. Do I need to pay income taxes on this amount? Because the bank sent me an income statement for the $950 and the school has sent me nothing. I know that higher education tuition is normally tax deductible for an unlimited number of years, which is different than when I first started college. Thanks!
Cashing Bonds While My Income is Low? I have $20,000 in EE bonds that are ~25 yrs old. About $8,000 of that is interest. My income will drastically go down in 2009 because I'm going back to school. Does it make sense to cash these in 2009 to take advantage of a low tax bracket? Probably wont have this advantage after 2009. I do NOT qualify for the bond education program.
Im looking for a good book on bonds or fixed income assets? Basically Im tired of losing money in the stock market. I have some cash to invest now and am wondering where I can stash USD 500'000 for 6mo. - 5 years and get 4-5% relatively risk free return on investment. Would be nice to preserve assets and put some stability in my normal trading portfolio. Any tips on what to look at or any book you can recommend. Thanks in advance, Erik
Are Income Bonds any good? I have National Savings Income Bonds are these good? they give me money paid into my current account every month and I want to keep building up the amount I have giving me a monthly income. Is it possible the rates could ever rise? The last time I checked I was getting 2.0% interest.
Is municipal bond income considered for AMT purposes? Hypothetical case: Let's say you're retired, and your sole source of income is from municipal bonds. When you fill out your 1040, it appears that you need only enter the amount of income from these tax free bonds, and that's it. Or is there a need to also figure AMT?
is it a good idea to hold all equities in retirement accounts and all fixed income/bonds in after tax accounts? Or should you have a diversity of stocks and bonds in both your pre-tax retirement accounts and your after tax accounts. It seems like you would want to have your more volatile investments (equities, high yield bonds) in your retirement account because of the longer time horizon and your less volatile ones (short term bonds, money market) in your after tax account in case you need to access the funds -- so long as the overall mix of stocks vs bonds in both accounts together presents an acceptable level of risk. Is that right?
Fixed Income Notes/Bonds? I'd very much like to invest in a note or bond that will pay a monthly or semi-annual income (i.e. actually pay cash every month or quarter). Something I could buy for someone that would reliably pay out income. *Preferably a treasury.* I cannot figure out which investments do this or how to calculate monthly or quarterly income paid out. If I bought a $10,000 bond/note at whatever interest (1,2,3,4%..) which ones would pay fixed income out and how much would that amount be? Please don't say "You're better off buying..." because I have my reasons for wanting a fixed income investment.

when bonds prices go up is that good for the market or bad for the market? lets say that interest go up and bonds prices go down. how does that affect the markets? bonds' prices going up, what kind of effect will have that on the market? negative or postive? The fed just cut its target on the federal funds rate to 4.25, how is this affecting the equity and bond markets, specially the Fixed Income market (bonds, govt securuties, etc)?

How should I invest my income tax refund? Municipal Bonds? Stocks? I was really saddened when I found out that the economic stimulus income tax award had limitations and only paid out $600.00 per individual because I wanted to just buy a new blazer with that. However, I don't qualify for the award. But I am expecting a good sized income tax refund and would like to get some ideas of how I should invest it. I was thinking about putting the bulk of it into municipal bonds, put a few thousand into my money market account, and maybe take two or three thousand to the Bunny Ranch in northern Nevada to let the girls have their way with me. As for the latter don’t we all deserve some release from the daily grind? Well comrades how should I portion out my investments with my income tax refund?
Does It make any sense to own Muni( tax free) bonds inside an IRA? I will be taking a rollover from 401K and funding an IRA. I will immediately be taking distributions from the IRA for living expenses. Is there any reason to own Muni bonds for income inside the IRA as compared to similar rated corporate of treasury bonds of the same duration. I plan to latter due dates between 2 and 15 years.
Are my Vanguard High Yield bonds still a good investment? I don't understand investments at all. I'm told that I'm still making income on these bonds even though "the value of the bonds has decreased." I know I'm ignorant but I don't get how this can be. Can anyone explain this to a nincompoop?
What are some good bonds to invest in? I am preparing my portfolio analysis for my investments class, and I have decided to invest 20% of my capital in bonds for the fixed income asset class. Does anyone have any bond recommendations & if so, why? Thanks!

Does income from Savings Bonds count against unemployment benefits in the state of Massachusetts? I was recently laid off, and am claiming unemployment benefits for Massachusetts. I have a few grand in Savings Bonds that I'd like to cash in to help get me by a bit longer past my severance pay, but I'm afraid that the money would count as 'earnings', and I will lose my unemployment checks for a few weeks. Personally, I consider this money a 'gift', as the bonds were bought by relatives during my childhood. I did not work for it, or 'earn' it, so I don't think it should count against my unemployment. Do they look at it the same way, or will I get stiffed? I intend to call up the Unemployment Office, but before I wait on hold forever, I figured I'd ask here. Yep, I am aware that both the Bonds and unemployment are taxable. Thank you.
Can somebody explain how income on form 1099-B is taxed? This year for the first time I received a form from my broker: 1099-B Proceeds from broker and barter exchange transactions: 2. Gross proceeds less commission on stock, bonds, etc $xxxxx 4. Federal income tax withheld $0.00 It list sales prices of all the stock I have sold. However, it does not indicate the purchase price. How will I be taxed? How would IRS know my capital gain? Surely, they won't tax the whole sales price?
